The sun will set on Universal Analytics by July 2023, so we’re supporting our clients to have GA4 set up by this July so that year-on-year data can be accessed in the same property. We’re working through event tracking, audience building and reporting requirements to ensure a seamless transition in 2023.

What is GA4?

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is officially the recommended property type of Google Analytics. GA4 can track both Website and App visits in a single Google Analytics property (instead of previously having them separated).

Following an announcement from Google on March 16, 2022, we know that GA4 will be the default option for standard properties from the 1st of July 2023.

What are some differences between GA4 and UA?

What does my business need to do?

Ideally, to have year on year comparisons of data in the same property, you will need to have a GA4 account set up by the 1st of July 2022. We are currently helping clients migrate to GA4 from Universal Analytics and setting up new GA4 accounts for those clients without an existing account. You can run both versions of Analytics together for a time before UA ceases altogether, so you start the game with as much data as possible. Better analytics leads to better, more informed decision-making.

Benefits of switching to GA4

So, what are some of the benefits to using GA4:

  • Cross Compatibility

With mobile becoming a dominant search device, GA4 can now provide data for app views as well as website views all in one property.

  • Cookieless Tracking

GA4 has accommodated for new privacy legislation and user requirements around access to personal data. GA4 now has a predictive AI which fills in gaps whilst maintaining privacy.

  • Journey and Engagement Tracking

This will give business owners a greater understanding of the full consumer journey, whilst leading to more conversion and event tracking

  • Trend Predictability

GA4 can now accurately predict new trends, allowing businesses to react quickly and gain competitive advantages.

  • Long Term Usability

Particularly after COVID-19, the rise in apps and online businesses has merited a need for GA4’s capabilities. GA4 is adaptive and built with the future in mind and alongside AI, it should be flexible to any new regulations or changes.

‘Connected Customers’ (those who use smart technology ie. smart TV, speaker, display or a streaming device at least once a month) stream music, podcasts or shows online and predictability favour online shopping.
